Lead-Based Paint Hazards

What you should know about lead-based paint:

  • Lead was used in paint to improve its performance
  • Residential paint with lead is no longer sold
  • Most houses built before 1978, including the majority of homes located in Syracuse, contain some lead-based paint
  • Lead-based paint in good condition is not hazardous
  • Lead dust from deteriorating lead-based paint is hazardous, particularly to children
  • Renovation or repairs done improperly can cause excessive lead dust and hazards for the workers and the occupants

In children, lead poisoning can cause:

  • Damage to the brain and nervous system
  • Behavior and learning problems
  • Slowed growth

In adults, lead poisoning can cause:

  • High blood pressure
  • Loss of memory and other neurological problems
  • Reproductive system damage
