Lead-Based Paint Hazards
What you should know about lead-based paint:
- Lead was used in paint to improve its performance
- Residential paint with lead is no longer sold
- Most houses built before 1978, including the majority of homes located in Syracuse, contain some lead-based paint
- Lead-based paint in good condition is not hazardous
- Lead dust from deteriorating lead-based paint is hazardous, particularly to children
- Renovation or repairs done improperly can cause excessive lead dust and hazards for the workers and the occupants
In children, lead poisoning can cause:
- Damage to the brain and nervous system
- Behavior and learning problems
- Slowed growth
In adults, lead poisoning can cause:
- High blood pressure
- Loss of memory and other neurological problems
- Reproductive system damage
