Lead-Based Paint Hazards

Home HeadQuarters works to educate all of our customers and contractors about the dangers posed by lead-based paint. Our trained staff members will advise you of potential lead-based paint hazards during your renovation or home purchase. We also offer on-site Lead Safe Work Practices training to construction contractors.

What you should know about lead-based paint:

  • Lead was used in paint to improve its performance
  • Residential paint with lead is no longer sold
  • Most houses built before 1978, including the majority of homes located in Syracuse, contain some lead-based paint
  • Lead-based paint in good condition is not hazardous
  • Lead dust from deteriorating lead-based paint is hazardous, particularly to children
  • Renovation or repairs done improperly can cause excessive lead dust and hazards for the workers and the occupants

In children, lead poisoning can cause:

  • Damage to the brain and nervous system
  • Behavior and learning problems
  • Slowed growth

In adults, lead poisoning can cause:

  • High blood pressure
  • Loss of memory and other neurological problems
  • Reproductive system damage

Whether you are getting a home improvement loan or down payment and closing cost assistance, HHQ staff will:

  • Inspect the property for deteriorated paint
  • Give you a written report detailing where lead hazards might be and how you can protect yourself and your family
  • Arrange for further paint testing if required
  • Ensure that properly trained workers deal with painted surfaces using lead-safe work practices
  • At the completion of the work, inspect and test if necessary to ensure that the lead hazards were dealt with properly
  • Provide you with written notification of the results of lead clearance testing conducted in your home
