Foreclosure Prevention Coalition
A coalition of seven Syracuse-based organizations has launched a regional
Foreclosure Prevention program to help combat the mortgage crisis in
Central New York. Using an innovative “triage” system based
on a single point-of-contact, struggling homeowners can now access FREE
financial and legal counseling, in English and in Spanish, from a network
of qualified providers within 48 hours.
The collaborative program, funded by the New York State Banking Department
and the Division of Housing and Community Renewal, will primarily target
Onondaga County while also providing services to four other counties
including Oswego, Cayuga, Cortland and Madison. Housing and financial
counseling is being provided by Cooperative Federal Credit Union, Home
HeadQuarters and the Northeast Hawley Development Association (NEHDA),
each of which are HUD-approved housing counseling agencies. Refinancing,
debt consolidation and loan modifications can also be arranged. Homeowners
can also receive free legal advice provided by Frank H. Hiscock Legal
Aid Society, Legal Services of CNY and the Syracuse University College
of Law. Syracuse United Neighbors (SUN) will lead grassroots outreach
efforts to educate neighborhoods and steer at-risk homeowners toward
the program.
For a homeowner, the process starts with a single phone call to Home
HeadQuarters’ foreclosure prevention center at (315) 474-1939 ext.
253 or an email to info@homehq.org.

Photo Journalist highlights Opportunity HeadQuarters
Home
HeadQuarters’ Construction and Apprentice crew was recently the
subject of a pictorial essay in a yearly photo magazine for members of
the armed services. The photo magazine piece focused on the crew’s
work on the Near Westside and the apprenticeship component which strives
to train low-income people in the construction trade. Army Sergeant Jordon
Huettl spent more than a month taking photos and writing an accompanying
story. The publication is due out this summer.
One Near Westside Home Goes Modular
Home
HeadQuarters is attempting new and different construction methods for
the various homes it’s building on the Near Westside. One single-family
home being built on Tully Street, designed by SU Students in the Architecture
School’s Westside Workshop, is in the process of being built in
a warehouse in PA. The fully-modular design will save on construction
costs and will incorporate affordable green design. The home will be
delivered to Syracuse late this summer and will be put together by local
construction folks and student volunteers. Electrical and plumbing will
be also be added by local contractors.
