Two Houses in Pieces!

With two very different outcomes, two Near Westside houses were in pieces this past week. One house, on Tully Street, was a newly constructed modular home that arrived in four house and two roof pieces and was placed by a 90-ton capacity crane. The SU School of Architecture students who designed the home in a studio run by Lea Ciavarra and Anne Marie Lubrano of lubrano ciavarra design, will be working on it throughout the summer adding siding and finishing minor carpentry items. The students will be managed by folks from VIP Structures who are donating their project and construction management skills. Home HeadQuarters has already sold the home to a couple excited to move into the Near Westside.

On Marcellus Street, a home was taken apart piece by piece in an attempt to deconstruct the home instead of just demolishing the structure. The four day project ended with materials from the home being sorted for either reuse or recycling. The property will become part of the new site for one of the From the Ground Up competition winners. Construction is expected to begin this Fall.

Funding support for these projects has been provided by the Empire State Development Corporation’s Restore NY Program, the Syracuse Neighborhood Initiative, the Syracuse School of Architecture and the Syracuse Center of Excellence.

Day-to-Day Living

When John Hendley and his wife Christine took Home HeadQuarters’ Homebuyer Education Course last year, the class made the difference in being able to transition from 25 years of being renters to proud homeowners. “After all of our experiences, we were surprised by all that we learned through the course,” admits John. “We were able to recognize warning signs and keep up with our credit, which made this possible.”

The Hendley’s moved into their two-family home on the city’s Southside in October. That same month Christine was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. Because they were no longer living in an apartment, John was able to bring Christine home, to live her last few weeks surrounded by family. The hospital bed she was confined to would not have fit in their old apartment, which would have made an impossible situation even more difficult.

While this has been a difficult year for John, he still feels that buying his home was meant to be and is keeping busy making renovations and improvements including creating a writing space to work on his poetry and song lyrics. John recently published his first book of poetry, Day to Day Living, and is working on three others.
