Groundbreaking extravaganza with the Near Westside Initiative, Home
HeadQuarters, Syracuse Center of Excellence, SU School of Architecture, Near
Westside residents and winning architecture firms Della Valle Bernheimer and
Architectural Research Office and Cook + Fox. |
The Near Westside was abuzz with activity this past week with a major groundbreaking
heralding the start of construction of the winning homes of the From The Ground
Up International Architectural Competition. The groundbreaking site on Otisco
Street showcases two of the homes with the other winning entry being built on
Marcellus Street. Two of the homes are already sold to new Near Westside owners.
Construction is expected to be completed in late spring.
Senator Schumer and HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan visited the
Near Westside to announce the Senator’s new Community Regeneration, Sustainability
and Innovation Act of 2009 which would work to address wide-spread vacant and
abandoned properties. The pair toured the Near Westside citing the neighborhood
as a positive and innovative example of work that is already being done to address
urban housing challenges.

Alys Mann, Home HeadQuarters’ Neighborhood Planning & GIS Manager discusses
Near Westside housing projects to HUD Secretary Donovan with others looking
on including, NWSI leader Marilyn Higgins, City of Syracuse Mayor Matthew
Driscoll, Syracuse Center of Excellence Director Ed Bogucz and NWSI Director

Home HeadQuarters’ staff escorted
Janice McKenna, Tipperary Hill Neighborhood Association President,
to Milwaukee, Wisconsin last week to attend NeighborWorks® America’s
Community Leadership Institute (CLI). Janice was acknowledged
at an awards ceremony during the CLI as one of eight Dorothy Richardson
Award winners throughout the United States for community service.
Northside Freedom Garden
Development was officially completed and celebrated on the Northside Freedom
Garden on the corners of Lodi and Townsend Streets last weekend with a ribbon
cutting ceremony. The garden, which was dedicated to the late Community
Development Commissioner Fernando Ortiz and longtime Northside neighborhood
activist Friar Phil Kelly, was made possible through the hard work of many
including Dominic Robinson from the MDA, Cheryl Doble from ESF, folks at
the Northside Collaboratory, Sharon Sherman and other city of Syracuse staff,
members of the SNI Steering Committee and dedicated Northside residents.
Still Blitzing????
Home HeadQuarters Annual Neighborhood Block Blitz may have been
held in August, but the work is continuing! Comfort Windows
installers Jesse Horning and John Church visited a home on North Townsend
Street to install five custom windows the company had donated to the August
event. Due to the home’s age and the uniqueness of the windows, Comfort
Windows had to place a special order for the donated
materials which took until just a couple of weeks ago to come in. Thank
you Comfort Windows!
