Do you have an extra dumpster we could borrow? How about some work gloves? A new window or two or ten? As Home HeadQuarters gets closer to the Annual Neighborhood Block Blitz on Thursday, August 5th, where volunteers and skilled workers help improve the homes in two city neighborhoods, we are trying desperately to cross some helpful items off of our list. Can you or someone you know donate any of the following:

Costa Rica or Syracuse?
Almost 40 volunteers from St. Andrew’s Church, located just outside Annapolis, Maryland, are signed up to volunteer for Home HeadQuarters’ Block Blitz. Actually, the group will be volunteering on the Southside for a full week helping to rebuild dilapidated porches and fences. How did they end up here in Syracuse? According to group members who worked down in New Orleans last year, Syracuse’s cooler weather and active housing programs made the city the winning location.
“We were thinking about Costa Rica for our volunteer outreach this year,” said Church project coordinator James Roberson. “But we all decided we wanted something cooler in temperature. We searched the internet for interesting housing programs, found Home HeadQuarters and decided Syracuse was a perfect location.”
If you would like to help support St. Andrew’s stay and work on our city’s Southside, please contact Karen at info@homehq.org or 474-1939 x249.
Calling all Artists!
For the Block Blitz on the Near Westside at the corners of Otisco and Ontario Streets, we’re looking for artists to help manage and coordinate some fun activities including sidewalk and curb painting and a mural for the neighborhood Police Storefront. We’re especially looking for some budding artists to help us add their personal touches to painting plywood boards that are used to secure home rehabilitation projects. If you would like to dip in a brush or two, please contact Ali at info@homehq.org or 474-1939 x259.
Onondaga Environmental Institute Pitches In!
At this year’s Block Blitz, educators from Onondaga Environmental Institute will work with Onondaga Earth Corps kids to develop and implement environmentally friendly landscape plans for homeowners on Landon Avenue. OEI folks also hope to sign up homeowners on both the Southside and Near Westside and train participants in conjunction with Onondaga County’s “Save the Rain” program, in rain barrel usage and proper maintenance.
