Apprentice Training Program
Opportunity HeadQuarters, Inc., a non-profit subsidiary of Home HeadQuarters, Inc., is a skilled construction crew that is dedicated to providing construction apprentice training opportunities for low to moderate-income individuals, with an emphasis on recruiting minorities and women, interested in securing permanent employment in the construction trade while supporting the creation of new or green housing for underserved people or neighborhoods as a way to strengthen communities.
The six-month construction training program introduces apprentices to construction math, measuring skills, basic carpentry, basic painting, job and interviewing skills, and general safety practices. Apprentices gain construction skills by working on-site at various residential rehabilitation and new construction projects as active crew members.
Each year, Opportunity Headquarters averages about 25 housing projects which include both substantial rehabilitation of vacant homes and new, single-family construction. Since 2008, 35 apprentices have completed the Apprentice Program. During their apprenticeship, each gained substantial paid work experience along with the job skills necessary for long-term employment in the construction industry, which according to the NYS Department of Labor, has been one of the growing employment sectors aiding in Syracuse's economic recovery.
